In ‘Cancel Culture’, Alan Dershowitz — New York Times bestselling author and one of America’s most respected legal scholars — makes an argument for free speech, due process, and restraint against the often overeager impulse to completely cancel individuals and institutions at the ever-changing whims of social media-driven crowds.
Alan Dershowitz has been called “one of the most prominent and consistent defenders of civil liberties in America” by Politico and “the nation’s most peripatetic civil liberties lawyer and one of its most distinguished defenders of individual rights” by Newsweek.
Yet he has come under intense criticism for his steadfast and consistent championing of those same principles, and his famed “shoe‑on‑the‑other‑foot test,” to those who have been “cancelled” for any number of faults, both real and imagined.
‘Cancel Culture’ is a defense of due process, free speech, and even-handedness in the application of judgment.
It makes the case for restraint and care in decisions about whom and what to cancel, boycott, deplatform, and bar from public life, and offers recommendations for when, why, and to what degree these steps may be appropriate, as long as objective, fair-minded criteria can be determined and met.
While Dershowitz argues against the worst excesses of cancel culture — the rush to judgment and the devastating results it can have on those who may be innocent, the power of social media to effect punishment without a thorough examination of evidence, the idea that historical events can be viewed through the same lens as actions in the present day — he also acknowledges that its defenders ostensibly try to use it to create meaningful, positive change, and notes that cancelling may itself be a constitutionally protected form of free speech.
In the end, ‘Cancel Culture’ represents an icon in the defense of free speech and due process reckoning with the greatest challenge and threat to these rights since the rise of McCarthyism.
It is essential reading for anyone interested in or concerned about cancel culture, its effects on our society, and its significance in a greater historical and political context.

The friends of Jeffrey Epstein are VERY upset about cancel culture.
October 29th, 2021
Thank you very much.
Strange Dersh still supports the Dem party.

When the right do it, it’s called ‘boycotting’ and ‘exercising their right to free speech’.
You want to talk about cancel culture, the teaching of Critical Race Theory, Black Lives Matter, The Dixie Chicks, James Gunn, Kathy Griffin, Colin Kaepernick, Nike, Beyonce, Nascar, or anyone else accused of so-called ‘virtue signalling’ gets cancelled by the right. Hell, you go back far enough and they even tried to cancel Harry Potter, Dungeons and Dragons and metal music.
Overly sensitive white Christians pretty much invented cancel culture. Bunch of thin-skinned projecting hypocrites.

The hate scum struggle with the reality of just how unpopular they really are. Thank God we dumped Trump.
October 29th, 2021
Lol. Imagine being so brain dead you think Colin Kaepernick, Nike, or Beyonce got canceled.
And then, realize that there’s at least one person here that is that brain dead.

Come on Gordon, tell us about yourself.
You seem intelligent, but you have so much time on your hands. And - who radicalised you?
You must admit you’ve got some fairly extreme opinions.
We’re all curious Gordon!

@GordonCoon - Ask your sister-wife put more fiber in your mush. It appears the waste is coming from the wrong end.
October 29th, 2021
And, Gordon, while I’m here, I’ll pick up on your response to Jack.
That’s the whole point.
Kaepernick was prevented from playing sport, I believe (I’m not a sports fan) which, if it had happened on the Right would have been screamed from the hilltops.
The others, as you say were not cancelled at all. Just like all of those on the Right who whine all the time about “cancel culture” and write dumb books like this one.
Morgan Wallen sold over double copies of his album after being called out for racism. I struggle to name ANYONE who has been effectively “cancelled”. Even Trump has only been prevented from using certain social media apps, and he’s invented his own, apparently.
So where is the cancel culture? Where are “The Cancelled”? It’s nonsense.
October 29th, 2021
Gordon, I’ll acknowledge your existence and address your points when you develop the ability to recognize a knee to the neck when you see it from multiple angles and multiple sources.
Until you’re capable of acknowledging reality, there’s just no point bothering with you.

Nobody stopped Colin from playing sport, except his own lack of talent.
Nobody stops Nike from using slave labor or children to make its shoes.
Somebody doesn’t seem to have taken bouncy’s billion away either.
You lefties would be amusing, apart from, you know, your support for slavery.
October 29th, 2021
My god, he really is a ridiculous man-child isn’t he? Can’t even bring himself to acknowledge that the boycotting of Nike was more to do with their support of Kaepernick than child labour.
I genuinely wish cancel culture were a real thing, because maybe then we could get gordon to stop talking bollocks.
October 29th, 2021
Lol. Jack you’re still shouting in favor of a company which uses slave labor.
Who cares why the boycott happened? It harmed a company that uses slaves.
Results count. Not motives.
Look at you, you’re shilling for slavery. You’re not one of the good guys.
October 29th, 2021
Oh Gordon, you poor sod.
I didn’t say anything positive at all about Nike. You need to work on your reading comprehension.
I dont own anything by nike and I don’t support them as a company. And neither do you, but I’d wager it’s more to do with their stance on BLM than anything else.
You’re using child labour as a shield for your racism. The idea of you genuinely caring for a suffering child who isn’t a white american is laughable.
October 29th, 2021
Also, cheers for being the only person here to advocate boycotting/cancelling something. Kinda proved my point for me there.

“one of the most prominent and consistent defenders of civil liberties in America”
Right… unless you’re the victim of famous football freak…
October 30th, 2021
Lol at Jack.
I’m not American.
My children hold Chinese citizenship.
I live in Asia.
Thanks all the same.
October 30th, 2021
Congrats on being the most stereotypical inbred american hick in Asia.
October 30th, 2021
It would be nice to cancel Biden. Now harris, I’d hit that. Hell, everybody else has.
November 1st, 2021
@TitusAD79
You’d “hit that”, would you?
She’d break your face wide open, soft lad.
Hilarious.
November 2nd, 2021
So, the lady would “hit” Titus then?
