Over the past three decades, the once-efficient American health care system has evolved into a complex maze of monopolies and a racket of bureaucratic checks, approvals, denials, roadblocks, and detours. This shift has created a massive and at times redundant workforce that frustrates patients, as well as physicians, nurses, and administrative staff. Health care costs the United States over $3 trillion each year and consumes over 18% of the country’s gross domestic product. That’s more than $11,000 for each person in the country each year - more than double what it costs in most Western European countries to deliver equal or even better care.
In Corporatizing American Health Care, Robert W. Derlet, MD, traces the progression of health care policy in the United States. How, he asks, has US health care transformed from bedside medicine - a model of small practices and patient-focused care - into corporate medicine, which prioritizes profit and deals with both patient care and outcomes as billing codes? Arguing that the US Congress is the root of the problem, he describes how Congress has failed to enact legislation to prevent corporate monopolies in the health care industry. Instead, corrupted by large campaign donations and corporate lobbyists, Congress has crafted loopholes benefiting corporations and harming people.

I pay $29,000 a year for two people on Blue Cross/Blue Shield with $2,500 deductible each! I still can’t get a free wellness check or free colonoscopy or free insulin. A drug whose formula was given away FREE by the original scientists who developed it! I don’t think socialized healthcare is the answer because we can all see that countries who adopted socialism have failed/are failing and are totalitarian.
We just need to put a boot in the healthcare insurance companies, stop paying the highest prices in the world for our meds and stop paying the healthcare bills of freeloaders who have no interest in contributing to society in the long-run. Short-term, sure I’ll help you out but I will teach you to fish instead of give you fish.
Looking forward to hearing this book.

@anova890 The USA is the only advanced economy in the world that doesn’t have universal healthcare for all. For profit healthcare is a failure for the people and does not lower the cost of healthcare.
All of those nations rank higher in healthcare than the USA, which ranks just above Cuba. All of them pay less per-capita for healthcare than USA, on average by 50%. In 19 of them they more have more freedoms than the USA. In 14 of them they have a higher standard of living than the USA. So hardly failed or failing states.
Also conflating socialized programs including medicine as being equivalent to socialist state is a propaganda slogan for the uneducated.

In America I pay more for my health insurance than other developed countries. I do not pay for it with over burdensome taxes. I pay for it with over burdensome insurance premiums. The great thing about American health care, however, is that when I needed to get bone spurs removed from my elbow I got that surgery performed within 10 days of diagnosis. When I wanted rhinoplasty for my deviated septum I got that performed in three weeks. I have a friend in Banff, Alberta who waited ten months for hip replacement! Ridiculous. This was long before COVID-19.
I was told by both my primary physician, who is a Russian immigrant who left the USSR in the early 90’s, and my insurance agent the reason my health insurance went from $6,400 per year for three people in 2009 to over $12,000 in 2010 was because of Obamacare (The unaffordable Care Act). Essentially, the money I earn is confiscated and redistributed to supplement the health care costs of people who come to this country illegally and people who don’t want to learn marketable skills.
Now the liberal politicians want to give up to $15,600 to undocumented immigrants who lost their jobs during the virus-induced crisis. What the hell? They don’t pay taxes! All this while we have homeless military veterans with mental or cognitive issues sleeping on the streets!
I seem to have strayed a bit.
Since 2020 I am now paying $29,000 per year for two people. It is as though I now have additional dependents I don’t get to write off on my taxes. This redistribution of my wealth sure smacks of Marx.
Socialist programs in America help create a class of people who come to depend on the handouts. There is a reason Yellowstone National Park has signs all over the landscape saying ‘Don’t Feed The Bears.’ The reason behind this is that they become dependent and will not forage for themselves any longer.
Liberal politicians talk all the time about needing more money to give away. They are clearly buying votes of the uneducated and unengaged.
As Margret Thatcher said, “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.”

@anova890
Thanks for quoting Thatcher, the liar in chief. There is no “other people’s money”. State creates money and a sovereign currency issuing state like the US or UK can never run out of $ or £. Austerity is a political choice to push money upwards, inflation is incompetence. As long as money is invested in people and infrastructure, a government can create as much money as it needs. Again, everything Thatcher said was a lie, Remember TINA?
And another thing: I am British and know Thatcher’s lies and the their disastrous effect on my country first hand.

@anova890: so your insurance agent told you the reason your insurance doubled was “Obamacare”. and you think that’s a reliable source.
OK.
You know, the whole reason the word “Obamacare” was coined was so that the GOP could demonise it as something done by a black guy.
And then throw some more fuel on the fire by calling it “socialist”.
All the time, getting funded my millions in donations from the medical industry, who are on to a good thing in the US.
Good for them that is.
