The marvelous complexity of the universe emerges from several deep laws and a handful of fundamental constants that fix its shape, scale, and destiny. There is a deep structure to the world which at the same time is simple, elegant, and beautiful. Where did these laws and these constants come from? And why are the laws so fruitful when written in the language of mathematics?
Peter Atkins considers the minimum effort needed to equip the universe with its laws and its constants. He explores the origin of the conservation of energy, of electromagnetism, of classical and quantum mechanics, and of thermodynamics, showing how all these laws spring from deep symmetries. The revolutionary result is a short but immensely rich weaving together of the fundamental ideas of physics.
With his characteristic wit, erudition, and economy, Atkins sketches out how the laws of nature can spring from very little. Or arguably from nothing at all.

“Ex nihilo nihil fit” - speculative, enigmatic appreciation.

Parm+ Herc frags in that order for a fun propaedeutic. Wrath of Kahn mind slugs intended only for opium addicts and not legit students. Also, may open a Lament configuration if there is one in the house.

…I keenly regret divesting myself of my Lament configuration. My brother was nearly sick at that sluggish point in Wrath of Khan (this was back in the before). Khan was wearing one hell of a muscle suit, with added fright wig. No wonder the ladies swooned - it wasn’t his vast, implausible intellect that sealed the deal.

If the universe is something from “nothing” then nothing must be something… the soup of ephemeral not-yet “z” particles that are not there and then they are - quantum fluxuations lurking below the threshold of existence and then popping into existence.

…and somethin’ can’t be nothin’

@ssafe @caesar The Girl’s Day ‘Something’ Official MV(captions off) settles the science on this if you listen closely. I’m studying Female President and Darling intensely to try and uncover more knowledge the Koreans are keeping to themselves and will report my findings to the Plato center posthaste. Sadly, all I have learned so far is I probably should be refused a Visa.

The Plato Centre has chosen to distance itself from you due to your monomaniacal fixation upon Koreans. They’ve retreated to an Allegory of the Cave. Otherwise, they’re in good Forms.
I’ve just realised that my bank account is some kind of weird subspace anomaly. It is something from which nothing comes. I’ll have to Latinise that later.

For a science writer, Atkins demonstrates an uncomfortable lack of precision in his use of “nothing”.
