Seth Andrews idolized Rush Limbaugh. He listened to Glenn Beck. He read Ann Coulter. He watched Fox News. He was an evangelical Christian once tethered to right-wing media, which constantly warned of an attack on American values by liberals and secular humanists. Today, Seth is a liberal and secular humanist.
This audiobook explores the Fox News culture, which both reflects and informs American conservatism, shaping public opinion on important issues like religion, government, race, foreign policy, war, protest, LGBT rights, and the Constitution. It’s an exposé of conservative media’s “closed systems” which constantly feed on (and feed into) public outrage, ignorance, bigotry, and fear. It’s also the story of one man’s personal journey into a larger and better world.

Thanks!

So, in the specific American context, Seth abandoned & exchanged narrow extremism…for yet more mindless extremism? Plus ça change…
The proverbial distinction sans a difference.

It’s interesting that Andrews sees Fox’ problem as neither its bigotry nor its lack of integrity, not its racism or its misogyny: but as its espousal of Christian values.
I’m sure that many US voters and citizens are in full agreement with him on that one.
Nice one, daenigma100.

Seems silly to put this in a “religious and spiritual” category as it’s anything but. It’s like putting Dawkins or Hitchens in that category.

Obvious neo-marxist trash that’s going to say all the obvious things. Why bother to read it when you already know everything it’s going to say just from the title?

thanks for this. Great to get an insight into almost half the country

Neo-Marxist…ha.
Don’t use terms when you don’t know what they mean. It just makes you look stupid.
Also I was not aware that liberalism and humanism were extremist viewpoints.

“In the specific American context” redstar, old chap. That peculiar phenomenon of militant, weaponised ignorance, abundantly evident across the political continuum, Stateside. I can only give the perspective of a bemused onlooker, and all of this coded nomenclature & ill-considered self-designation (mostly misnomers) seems to amount to substantially the same thing: barking mad partisans.
The same spectrum of increasingly incoherent, bombed out combatants & veterans of the braindead Culture Wars. Everything has to be expressed at the highest Manichean, apocalyptic pitch. The “discourse” (such as it is) abounds exclusively with febrile superlatives. Then there’s the ubiquitous tonality of toxic polarisation & freighted accusation (”literally Hitler” anyone?).
You might meet a liberal humanist in my own neck of the woods, but somehow they won’t exhibit the same terrifying, low blink rate which signals imminent, savage attack. Or Parkinson’s.
Political maturity could be a factor. And more accurate self-description, informed by a modicum of self-awareness.

…you win today’s award for most bizarre, mind-melting non-sequitur. And it’s an intensely competitive field.
