She ruled Egypt not as Queen but as Pharaoh, thirty five centuries ago. Yet her name appears in no dynastic scrolls, nor is her reign celebrated on monuments.
Hatshepsut: warrior, queen; who assumed the throne of Egypt, lived her life by her own design, and ruled as Pharaoh.

A true classic of epic, historical fiction.

Notes:
This recording, narrated superbly by Elise Goldsmith, was produced originally by the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. It has been recovered from a cassette copy, made by myself in the late ’80s, during a period in which I had access to the Talking Book library of the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind in Melbourne, Australia. It is conceivable that no other copy of this reading remains; the RVIB library was destroyed almost wholesale in the early 200s. Furthermore, so far as I can ascertain, the CNIB Library has no record of this book ever being recorded. It must be assumed that the original master has been lost, and that this reading now is very rare.

Conversion:
The only post-processing applied was phase correction, courtesy of iZotope RC3 Advanced. Noise reduction was not performed; the result, when attempted, was unlistenable, even with iZotope’s algorithms, which by far are the best I’ve encountered. MP3 encoding was achieved using LAME 64bits version 3.99.5 (http://lame.sf.net): a tremendously better encoder than any Fraunhofer variant, using the old VBR algorithm (still better in my opinion); VBR quality 5; encoder quality 0 (highest). I made no attempt to split the book into chapters; each file represents a single cassette track.

Minor problems:
Being possibly as much as a fourth-generation copy, there is some minor adjacent-track bleed-through, particularly on tracks 3, 4, 7, 8, 11 and 12. Due to the nature of the four-track APH cassette format, this manifests as faint, backwards speech. Fortunately, it is not intrusive, just a little annoying.
