Why is our society so unequal? Why, despite their small numbers, do the rich dominate policy and politics even in democratic countries? Why is it so difficult for working people to organize around common interests? How do we begin to build a more equal and democratic society?
Vivek Chibber provides a clear and accessible map of how capitalism works, how it limits the power of working and oppressed people, and how to overcome those limits. The capitalist economy generates incredible wealth but also injustice. Those who own the factories, hotels, and farms always have an advantage over the people who rely on that ownership class for their livelihoods. This inequality in power and income is reflected in the operation of the state, where capitalists are able to exert their will even under relatively democratic conditions. The most important reason is that states depend on the employment and profits from capitalist enterprise for both finances and legitimacy. Every meaningful victory for working people has been won through collective struggle but collective action is very difficult to coordinate. In the final section of the book, Chibber walks the reader through some of the historical attempts to build socialism and presents a vision of how we might, perhaps against the odds, build a socialist future.

Last time I checked Capitalism was lifting people out of poverty. Don’t bother with this Marxist nonsense.

Whenever I see these types of books I go in to look at the comments because there are always people (men, mostly) who, most likely without having read the book, NEED to give their angry or sarcastic opinion defending capitalism as if it were their mother xD I don’t know, it’s very funny to me. Thanks audiobookbay and thanks daenigma100 :)

Someone has a different idea to improve the established system. Why? because the old system isn’t perfect and it isn’t working for everybody. Is the new idea a better one? I don’t know. That’s why I’m listening to it.

I find people who criticize without a valid solution to be the most annoying people. Any system has its flaws and any system can be perverted to make it oppressive. Capitalism without checks and balances is just as bad as communism. That is why countries have things like the American constitution. The comments here on the failed soviet system fail to understand that it was not the system that caused millions of deaths it was the rulers within that system that did that. Just as fascism did not cause the holocaust (Spain was a fascist country for years after World War 2). It was the leadership of a fascist country that did that.
Capitalism is not evil or responsible for the actions of the people that follow it. It is just a system. It is a tool like a hammer. Communism is the same it is just a system. It is a tool just like a saw. It is not the system that is evil it is how the leadership uses that system.
That is why we have laws and things like the Constitution. The Constitution of the United States does not say only capitalism is allowed because it is not the system it is written for but the people who will use that system.

Guys its called a holding a position, an argument, you read the book, struggle with the argument, agree in places, disagree in others, then after much reflection, you research and write your own book holding your own position, hopefully something provocative and compelling, and the tradition carries on….

Pandering to the woke, who will make us all broke.

Ahhh yes, Rebel just call it woke that is your answer to everything. No need to refute the ideas with facts and counterarguments. Just call it woke and bang that is it. Pathetic at best. Most of you can’t even define what is woke as it means everything and anything you disagree with
Well keep it up I bet that kind of massive stupid plays well on Qnon.

Calling something ‘Woke’ is calling something specifically Neo-Marxist, maybe a few people have lumped it in with just Marxism, but that is the extent of the false label, at least on here.
You can stop attacking people for “just labeling things they don’t like as ‘Woke’”
What they are saying is it is Neo-marxist, what they don’t like is Marxism. And with its record so entirely undefeated in failure, it’s not hard to see why. We won’t even get into the extent of those failures, but we are talking hundreds of millions of human beings.
Woke or Neo-marxism divides the world into two categories. Where tradition marxism bifurcated society along economic lines, Neo-Marxism divides the world up into ‘oppressor’ and ‘oppressed’
Although it really doesn’t matter what the names are, it ends the same way.
One group is entitled to everything no matter who it comes from or how many lives are destroyed in the process.
The other group is the enemy and for that, anything can be done to them, and anything can be taken from them.
All power is centralized in the new state who, is responsible for redistributing all wealth and resources as they see fit. There are no checks and balances and there is no power sharing.
That is why horrible things can go on for so long before these regimes are finally brought down. This is always after great loss and suffering; where that nation will never be the same again.
It is still happening today with the same results. In China, the laobaixing are still slaves today, and the uyghur muslims are being tortured and exterminated.
China would fall in a year if they were cut off from western capital, their economy is completely illegitimate, as is their claim to power. As are almost all marxist regimes.
D, or daenigma100 is the biggest true-believer on this site. She is responsible for 90% of the Marxist and anti-capitalist material on here. If your marxist education is or has come from this site, you should thank her.

The best alternate means for a society to exist was demonstrated by the “Venus Project”, on youtube: Zeitgeist: Addendum and Zeitgeist: Moving Forward.
There are answers out there, most people are just too lazy to look into them.

I will have to disagree with you. Here is an example of a usage of the work woke. Elon Musk is upset because his new AI seems to be woke. It is saying trans rights are important. So any talk about rights is woke. Nope, it is not about Marxism neo or not.
I read viewpoints from all sides from Infowars to MSNBC. Far-right on sites etc. You might want to believe or justify woke as neo-Marxist just so you can feel better about using it as an insult to shut down debate yet the clear facts are using woke in the negative is a blanket term for anything and everything you disagree with
Woke is now used by the right to shut down any debate about any rights or anything counter to their beliefs.
If you believe in gun control you are woke. If you believe in collective bargaining you are woke. You want free healthcare you again are woke. These examples are from Infowar’s comments.
You support the democrat party you are woke.
So no you are wrong woke is not just used for neo-Marxists. It is anything and everything you disagree with.
You can try to sugarcoat it in any way you want. Yet you and everyone else know you use woke so you don’t have to debate and answer hard questions on your beliefs. You can just call anyone who questions and does not follow the instructions and follow the party line like a little happy sheep woke.
Disagree question no matter what you disagree with or question you are woke and not to be listened too.

I highly recommend that folks who want to use the word “woke” look up its actual (Black American) history. Granted that language does and will change all of the time.
That said, it originally meant something QUITE different to what it is being used as now by “traditionalist” and right-wing white folks. And I agree that it is being used by people to shut down conversations that they disagree with but know virtually nothing about.
