“What makes Trump immune is that he is not a president within the context of a healthy Republican government. He is a cult leader of a movement that has taken over a political party - and he specifically campaigned on a platform of one-man rule. This fact permeates “Can It Happen Here? . . . which concludes, if you read between the lines, that “it” already has.” - New York Times Book Review
Several of the contributors…agree that American politics is susceptible to creeping authoritarianism and provide the intellectual underpinning. - Washington Post
With the election of Donald J. Trump, many people on both the left and right feared that America’s 240-year-old grand experiment in democracy was coming to an end, and that Sinclair Lewis’ satirical novel, It Can’t Happen Here, written during the dark days of the 1930s, could finally be coming true. Is the democratic freedom that the United States symbolizes really secure? Can authoritarianism happen in America?
Acclaimed legal scholar, Harvard Professor, and New York Times bestselling author Cass R. Sunstein queried a number of the nation’s leading thinkers. In this thought-provoking collection of essays, these distinguished thinkers and theorists explore the lessons of history, how democracies crumble, how propaganda works, and the role of the media, courts, elections, and fake news in the modern political landscape–and what the future of the United States may hold.

Authoritarianism like confiscating everyone’s gold in 1933 (Executive Order 6102) and then repricing it? Like that kind of authoritarianism, or was that still the glory days of democracy?

It is happening and for the last three years.
It just depends what your politics are as to whether or not you’re in danger—for now

You’re not even an American hdgdf.
You don’t live in American.
Get a life

Funny, because none of that happened when Trump was repairing the destruction Obama did to this country. But we are seeing it under Biden…

The vast majority of people who support the idea of a dictator have never lived under one and would be very unhappy with an authoritarian government. The grand right wing plan of an under educated populace seems to be bearing fruit. What I find difficult to understand is why you would follow any belief system that requires you to constantly be angry and afraid. If Trump gets back into the White House you can say good bye to the USA. By the way,in time, your guns will be taken away as dictators do not want an armed populace.

It is easy to understand tomebiter1355. Fear is an easy emotion to use. Yet the problem is it fades so you have to keep bringing up bigger and bigger fears till it gets so silly you get what we have now.
Just look at our current world. Any federal government has small effects on your everyday life.
Your local government has way more important effects on a person than who is president prime Minister or whatever person that rules your country.
Yet people are so upset about who gets put in charge they are willing to go to extremes over something minor instead of focusing on local government.
That is the power of fear. Just look at it now. If (insert party or ruler here)our lives will end freedom will end and we will all die in terror and pain. Won’t someone think of the children!
It is now past the point of being stupid and is now in the realm of insanity.
The only way to stop this is for politics to stop using fear and use only facts and good policy. I do not believe that will happen until real blood flows in the streets in such a large amount the public forces the ending of the use of fear in politics.
I see this taking a full civil war and the destruction of the United States as a world power. Only then as people see what was once a great nation is turned into a battle zone. Only then will people finally learn that fear does not work.

Typical leftist inversion of the truth and projecting their own evils upon their opponents.

An arm-waiving screed by the weasel that has actively worked to destroy the country by conspiring to promote an invasion of illegals.
He was appointed as senior counselor for immigration at DHS in early 2021. With apparatchiks like this authoritarianism is the least of our worries.

Eek! The end is here. The invasion is happening right now! Oh, the horror. Won’t someone think of the children! Eek!
Keep the fear going hearbook 4. Without it what is you have? How about real reasonable solutions that would work and can be implemented? Oh wait it is way easier to just yell and scream in anger and fear than to fix anything.
Hey better yet how about just discount it as left and woke and then run around yell the world’s ending?
No point bringing real ideas to the table.

Irony, thy name is “Cluckers”.
“Keep the fear going” is precisely the theme of this book that threatens “authoritarianism”.
The ideas that were working have been systematically dismantled by Sunstein which is why the invasion is gaining pace.
No matter which way you try to redirect attention there is no rationale for making the border open to those who are dependent on subsidies.

It’s great that nobody is even engaging with these old fascists and pudgy incels any more. Maybe one day we’ll see it right here on audiobookbay - they collectively realise that their lives are pointless, their families won’t talk to them, they live alone in their own filth and blame everyone else for their own patheticness. The day’s coming boys, be ready with that toaster in the bath!

Comments show who voted for Trump. Racists. The uneducated fearful. No wonder America is tanking in 2025. The world is watching.
