Description
Buddenbrooks, first published in Germany in 1900, when Mann was only twenty-five, has become a classic of modem literature — the story of four generations of a wealthy bourgeois family in northern Germany. With consummate skill, Mann draws a rounded picture of middle-class life: births and christenings; marriages, divorces, and deaths; successes and failures. These commonplace occurrences, intrinsically the same, vary slightly as they recur in each succeeding generation. Yet as the Buddenbrooks family eventually succumbs to the seductions of modernity — seductions that are at variance with its own traditions — its downfall becomes certain.
In immensity of scope, richness of detail, and fullness of humanity, Buddenbrooks surpasses all other modem family chronicles; it has, indeed, proved a model for most of them. Judged as the greatest of Mann’s novels by some critics, it is ranked as among the greatest by all. Thomas Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1929.

Alexander Scourby some considered to be the finest narrator who ever worked (deceased 1985). He was a giant in the recordings for the blind world of the 1940s-1960s. Likewise Buddenbrooks one of the finest novels ever written. The cherry is that this audiobook is rare and hard to find. I don’t know where you got it my friend but please, upload more like it!

@Koshuyawa - Good to know! Thanks for the info - this truly is a wonderful resource, especially for people whose eyesight is failing them (like myself) or impaired in some way. I’m continuously gratified by the generosity of uploaders, their instinct to share and the wonderful books they hunt down and find.
I suppose that makes us all anarchists of some description!

So excited to listen to this, thank you cabbagedoll!! This is a great book and Scourby recorded my alltime favorite reading of the KJV Bible.
If there is any recording in existence of The Magic Mountain I would super appreciate an upload! (There may not be, I’ve been looking for sometime.)

@debonair - I’ve only come across a BBC dramatization, not much help I’m afraid!

May I ask which translation the narrator reads from? Does anybody know?

Could you upload the mp3 version please. I can’t change it from m4b to mp3. It seems to be copyright protected. Thanks

@anthonymjg81 The translation is, unfortunately, by H.T. Lowe-Porter. The image for this download really ought to be changed because it’s misleading. It shows the front cover of the finest translation by John E. Woods that Everyman Library published. That is not what you download.

@Koshuyawa: How do you figure it was released in 1941? The book you are referencing is from 1936, so it must be at least that old, but I can’t see any year for the release of the records.
