Why we need to stop wasting public funds on education
Despite being immensely popular - and immensely lucrative - education is grossly overrated. In this explosive book, Bryan Caplan argues that the primary function of education is not to enhance students’ skill but to certify their intelligence, work ethic, and conformity - in other words, to signal the qualities of a good employee.
Learn why students hunt for easy A’s and casually forget most of what they learn after the final exam, why decades of growing access to education have not resulted in better jobs for the average worker but instead in runaway credential inflation, how employers reward workers for costly schooling they rarely if ever use, and why cutting education spending is the best remedy.
Caplan draws on the latest social science to show how the labor market values grades over knowledge and why the more education your rivals have, the more you need to impress employers. He explains why graduation is our society’s top conformity signal and why even the most useless degrees can certify employability. He advocates two major policy responses. The first is educational austerity. Government needs to sharply cut education funding to curb this wasteful rat race. The second is more vocational education, because practical skills are more socially valuable than teaching students how to outshine their peers.
Romantic notions about education being “good for the soul” must yield to careful research and common sense - The Case Against Education points the way.

Libertarian wankery. The poor don’t need schooling to work, gives them ideas above their station. Let them go down the mines at 12 like the good old days. And reduce taxes on the wealthy, who will continue to send their progeny to elite private schools and get all the elite jobs.

Your education is one of the few things no rich man can take from you.
And don’t they hate it.
This is one for the planters.

@Gweilo First off I agree that the argument that education isn’t needed because the job market doesn’t demand, for example, any understanding of comparitive religion or Greek philosopy is so much drivel.
The objections to the way the education system has been twisted by greed is entirely valid. Last job I had before my health quit on me was at a university. Absurd amounts of waste and the students were there for pieces of paper rather than to learn anything, and most of them felt the degree was an entitlement if they showed up. So they’d stage protests and harassment campaigns against any professor who actually had grading standards. It was better at the grad level, but in undergrad almost every test was open book because students dog whistled any required course that required effort and just made the professor’s life utterly miserable until they caved.
So, yes, the intent of the author is detestable, but the points that the author makes are actually valid criticisms, at least within the US. We need education, but what we have is just the facade of education. High cost chair warming. As I said, grad school is better, but these problems are starting to show up in those degree programs too. Calls for reform are both valid and needed, just not reform from the sole perspective of market demand.

Hooray! Caplan is a lone voice of sanity in the wilderness about education

Libertarianism in a nutshell:
Step 1: Point out a very real and very obvious way in which our society is broken. (Employers want you to have an expensive degree because crushing student loan debt makes you easier to control and exploit.)
Step 2: Suggest a solution that is utter nonsense and will make everything a hundred times worse. (Cut all government scholarships and education funding so student debt will be even *more* crushing. Also, take one guess how Caplan feels about student loan forgiveness.)

Well, congratulations to the many commenters, who have so ably made the case that a modern education is, indeed, worthless.
You can get a world-class education, for free, online. The only purpose of the college system is to bilk the gullible and as always with the left, there are so many gullible fools out there.
Education is a result of economic growth, it has never been a driver for economic growth except in the imaginations of clowns.
If you’re dumb enough to take $200,000 worth of loans to read finger painting at Yale, that’s on you, nobody else.
Does the system need reform? You bet.
There is no reason that the majority of degree courses couldn’t be delivered online for peanuts (compared to today’s fees).
There are no urgent developments in fields like English Literature or Fine Art that require a total revamp of a course on an annual or even ten-year basis.
I won’t read/listen to this book because it’s a waste of time, if you don’t recognize how unfit for purposes the education systems of the West are? You’re a sucker and nothing will change that.

You mean to tell me that TCU at $61,000 per year (now the country’s most expensive university just edging out Harvard) isn’t worth it. Shocking.
