The first 5 novels in Timothy Hallinan’s Poke Rafferty series of thrillers set in Bangkok.
#1 - A Nail Thru the Heart (10 hrs & 52 mins)
Poke Rafferty was writing offbeat travel guides for the young and terminally bored when Bangkok stole his heart. Now the American expat is assembling a new family with Rose, the former go-go dancer he wants to marry, and Miaow, the tiny, streetwise urchin he wants to adopt.
But trouble in the guise of good intentions comes calling just when everything is beginning to work out. Poke agrees to take in Superman, Miaow’s troubled and terrifying friend from the gutter. Then he agrees to help locate a distraught Aussie woman’s missing uncle and accepts a generous payment to find a blackmailing thief. No longer gliding carelessly across the surface of a culture he doesn’t really understand, suddenly Poke is plodding through dark and unfamiliar terrain - and everything and everyone he loves is in terrible danger.
#2 - The Fourth Watcher (10 hrs & 53 min)
Trouble is back in Poke’s life with a vengeance, in the guise of his long-estranged father, Frank, the last person he ever wanted to see again. And Frank hasn’t come empty-handed, arriving with a box of rubies, a wad of fraudulent identity papers, and one of the most dangerous gangsters in China in hot pursuit. With a rogue American Secret Service agent targeting Rose for her unwitting part in a North Korean counterfeiting operation, Poke can see trouble descending from everywhere to attack those he loves - and it will take every skill he possesses to keep them, and himself, alive.
#3 - Breathing Water (11 hrs & 43 mins)
A late-night poker game in Bangkok nets Poke Rafferty the “opportunity” to write the biography of Khun Pan, a flamboyant, vulgar, self-made billionaire with a criminal past and far-reaching political ambitions. Within hours, Rafferty, his wife, Rose, their adopted daughter, Miaow, and Poke’s best friend, honest Bangkok cop Arthit, have become disposable pawns in a brutal power struggle among some of Thailand’s richest, most ruthless citizens.
#4 - The Queen of Patpong (11 hrs & 50 mins)
Poke believes his life is stable at last. Then a nightmare figure from Rose’s time as a Patpong dancer barges into their world, threatening their peace, their love, their home, their lives. Suddenly, Poke’s only recourse is to uncover the whole truth of Rose’s past to follow the dark and twisting journey that turned a shy, awkward village teenager into the queen of Asia’s most lurid red-light district: Patpong Road. But the secrets that await him may be almost impossible for Poke to accept - and even harder to survive.
#5 - The Fear Artist (12 hrs & 2 mins)
An accidental collision on a Bangkok sidewalk goes very wrong when the man who ran into Rafferty dies in his arms, but not before saying three words: “Helen Eckersley. Cheyenne.” Seconds later, the police arrive, denying that the man was shot. That night, Rafferty is interrogated by Thai secret agents who demand to know what the dead man said, but Rafferty can’t remember. When he’s finally released, Rafferty arrives home to find that his apartment has been ransacked. In the days that follow it becomes apparent that he’s been caught on the margins of the war on terror, and that his opponent is a virtuoso artist whose medium is fear.
