This book presents the kind of eye-opening insights into the history and culture of race for which Sowell has become famous.
As late as the 1940s and 1950s, he argues, poor Southern rednecks were regarded by Northern employers and law enforcement officials as lazy, lawless, and sexually immoral. This pattern was repeated by blacks with whom they shared a subculture in the South. Over the last half century poor whites and most blacks have moved up in class and affluence, but the ghetto remains filled with black rednecks.
Their attempt to escape, Sowell shows, is hampered by their white liberal friends who turn dysfunctional black redneck culture into a sacrosanct symbol of racial identity.
In addition to Black Rednecks and White Liberals, the book takes on subjects ranging from Are Jews Generic? to The Real History of Slavery.

Liberal whites NEVER criticize anyone but whites they see as of lesser social status. Blacks can shoot 70 people in a weekend in Chicago and they are afraid to notice. It is so deeply ingrained.

@Jsynapses It’s almost scary how blind you are the same issue you speak of. Funny how you folks always have statistics about Chicago or Black on Black crime but I have yet to see a single one of you take even as much as 60 seconds to discuss the cause or even a solution. Why? Because it’s a go to and it’s easier to cry like you do than to fix stuff. Hence why Trump is in office, people who fix things are elitist liberals but self destructive narcissists that make you feel special because he goes to the same go to information but doesn’t fix things fits your moral values and intelligence level.

And what have YOU done, son? Pretty much the same thing. Nothing. Except complain about ole Whitie. He the problem, not the 98% that are killed by their own kind. The solution? Let them kill each other…since no one cares. Right??? Really sad when a 3-year-old and a teen girl gets killed in the same week. But few people care. Not newsworthy. Not protest worthy. People like you make us sick. How about YOU get off your @$$ and do something? I am white and don’t live in a big town. Nothing I can do. What? I should go to a BLM protest? Yeah, that will help :D

Addressing several comments, a people should care and take control of solving their race issues. I can control how I act, react, and conduct myself in all situations including stress, financial, and relationship hardships.
I live in a suburb of Chicago and despite being 54, am 6′5″, in excellent shape, extensive experience fighting (hand/hand/weapon), licensed to carry concealed firearm, I will not go into the city. B on B crime is my issue because the violence has escalated to shooting to non-black women, children, elderly, the weak. Don’t blame me for anything - it’s their choice to be criminals. Don’t point finger while mumbling white privilege silliness - i grew up in a multi-racial town, family on welfare for a period, and despite his many illnesses my father would’ve kicked me from Thursday to 6 months in a coma if I behaved as these criminals do. Humanity is one step removed from animals - if the lights went out then society becomes chaos and primarily the strong thugs will destroy the weak. Ending the ability to commit an innocent’s future death is the sole answer. Sowell says, want to make something of yourself, then possess an ability people are willing to pay for. Want to shot/kill, then protect our rights by joining the military.
