Most people believe that they were either benefited or at least not harmed by being brought into existence. Thus, if they ever do reflect on whether they should bring others into existence—rather than having children without even thinking about whether they should—they presume that they do them no harm. Better Never to Have Been challenges these assumptions. David Benatar argues that coming into existence is always a serious harm. Those who never exist cannot be deprived. However, by coming into existence one does suffer quite serious harms that could not have befallen one had one not come into existence. Drawing on the relevant psychological literature, the author shows that there are a number of well-documented features of human psychology that explain why people systematically overestimate the quality of their lives and why they are thus resistant to the suggestion that they were seriously harmed by being brought into existence. The author then argues for the “anti-natal” view—that it is always wrong to have children—and he shows that combining the anti-natal view with common pro-choice views about fetal moral status yield a “pro-death” view about abortion. Although counter-intuitive for many, that implication is defended, not least by showing that it solves many conundrums of moral theory about population.

What is Wrong with you?
(Besides the fact that you moderate for this great site) Everything you put up is disgusting and nobody appreciates it.
If you didn’t constantly purge the comments we would all see the longest threads and most engagement as a result of the things you post. . . And it is ALL in condemnation.
Seriously, I feel really sorry for you but why would you want to bring down others?

Look, I thought about it and I am sorry. Maybe I’m going about this all wrong.
I will try and listen to some of your contributions. Just not this one, it is too inaccessible but something.
I hope you feel better.

I’ll give it a go. I certainly hope the blurb doesn’t describe the volume for there are many reasons not to procreate at present and most of them can be easily validated using statistics and other branches of mathematics. And no, I’m not referring to Malthusian assumptions.

Excellent offering that challenges our thinking triggering much discussion.
Highly rated elsewhere even though its controversial. It’s a must read for all those who respect life in general. Thank you for posting this. It was a good read.

I disagree with the author but he is an excellent philosopher. (We’ve even organized a worshop with him). Thank you so much for sharing!
For a better alternative to Benatar, I recommend: Iddo Landau: Finding meaning in an imperfect world (New York: Oxford University Press, 2017).

Being born as a human is a very precious gift. And all our pains and joys are in the path of purifying our soul.
Man’s effort to understand his existence is very valuable. And even the most wrong analyzes gradually move us towards enlightenment.
It is important to be like flowing water and use all our efforts to acquire knowledge.
Anti-natalism is an ancient belief. And especially Gnostics and Manichaeans believe in it. Theoretical mysticism without practical experience has led to extreme beliefs. But all this multiplicity of opinions is ultimately on the path of enlightenment.

Daenigma, I just want to say thanks for everything you do. youve consistently been one of my favorite contributors. I like watching where your head is at as your posts move through ideas. this one is verging into “I hope youre ok” territory… so, i hope youre okay.

…and that David Benatar is alright in himself. He said that his head has been in this space since childhood.
Just to leaven this rather depressive, pathological perspective with peculiar, er, comedy, some antinatalists view the procreation of animals negatively also, & see sterilisation as the solution. Benatar applies his anti-life bias in this area also, suggesting that we choose nonlife for other species as well.

Like many modern philosophers, he just doesn’t think it through …

Pulled my review done… guess I stepped on some toes calling it woke garbage.

@Columbia21: Daenigma isn’t a moderator. Uploaders can modify or delete their own torrents.
A few right wing trolls piling on to abuse his uploads isn’t an indication of general “condemnation”. Torrent comments aren’t for diatribes by loons who have never read the books they attack.
There are currently dozens downloading this book, which is a better indication of interest than counting sh1tposts by a brigade of trolls.
I understand his annoyance at the garbage posted on his torrents by those triggered by the topics. I would prefer these were reported in the forum and then we will delete them without needing to repost the torrent.

It is always useful to have one’s own views and beliefs challenged, life becomes more interesting. I totally disagree with the premise of the book but it has confirmed and made more robust my own views.
