Water. Food. Housing. The most basic and crucial needs for survival, yet 40 percent of people in the United States don’t have the resources to get them. With key policy changes, we could eradicate poverty in this country within our lifetime - but we need to get started now.
Nearly 40 million people in the United States live below the poverty line - about $26,200 for a family of four. Low-income families and individuals are everywhere, from cities to rural communities. While poverty is commonly seen as a personal failure, or a deficiency of character or knowledge, it’s actually the result of bad policy.
Public policy has purposefully erected barriers that deny access to basic needs, creating a society where people can easily become trapped - not because we lack the resources to lift them out, but because we are actively choosing not to. Poverty is close to inevitable for low-wage workers and their children, and a large percentage of these people, despite qualifying for it, do not receive government aid.
From Joanne Samuel Goldblum and Colleen Shaddox, Broke in America offers an eye-opening and galvanizing look at life in poverty in this country: how circumstances and public policy conspire to keep people poor, and the concrete steps we can take to end poverty for good.
In clear, accessible prose, Goldblum and Shaddox detail the ways the current system is broken and how it’s failing so many of us. They also highlight outdated and ineffective policies that are causing or contributing to this unnecessary problem.
Every chapter features action items listeners can use to combat poverty - both nationwide and in our local communities, including the most effective public policies you can support and how to work hand-in-hand with representatives to affect change.
So far, our attempted solutions have fallen short because they try to “fix” poor people rather than address the underlying problems. Fortunately, it’s much easier to fix policy than people. Essential and timely, Broke in America offers a crucial road map for securing a brighter future.

my prescription? Close the borders. Have the state do everything possible to support the family unit. Return to 3 generation homes. Promote thrift rather than consumerism.
Realize not everyone is going to make it. People who make bad life decisions will suffer from them. The herd needs to be culled every now and then of the weak members.

The overwhelming majority of poor people are poor because they have no marketable skills and suck with money. Giving poor money doesn’t give them job skills, and training them in a trade doesn’t make them responsible with money. Poverty is not going anywhere. It is possible to move out of poverty, but it requires overcoming both issues. You can’t do that for someone, they have to choose to do it.

Appropriate funding for an effective system of public education? Anyone?

Sorry, Caesar. While you are usually on point, the government education system is irreparable. Everything about it is either based on false premises or has been corrupted to perverse ends.
Poverty is natural, prosperity is rare. To paraphrase Thomas Sowell, humanity was born in poverty. Most people who wish to climb out of poverty can, but they have to be willing to stop blaming others and to make radical priority changes.
The best formula is still:
Graduate High School (because right or wrong, it helps get a better job)
Get a full time job
Do not have children before marriage.
Of course, going to college is even better for getting a job - though far worse for those seeking to leave victimhood behind…
Staying married after having children actually helps the next generation be even more stable and prosperous. Of course, that generation will have to accept their college professors and other lefties like Goldblum and Shaddox blaming them for holding others down, but that’s part of the price.
We all know what to do, but like everything else, those willing to do it are far outnumbered by those who simply won’t.

I have to agree with most of that: the public ed system in the US, and over in the UK, has been failing for decades. Also stability is absolutely crucial for children (I had the opposite experience myself, so I know whereof I speak). Individual responsibility, and the child witnessing this example, is indeed almost too obvious to even state. There are many people in very complex & difficult situations, not all of their own making, and they have not had the luxury/necessity of this beneficial example.
I still think that funding, improving, and targeting public education is key.
Here in the Republic of Ireland, we made a decision to prioritise education many decades ago (after we achieved independence). Economically, we faced considerable challenges, and this was a vital long-term goal, in the interests of survival (we lacked industry, many vital natural resources, and had an enormous emigration problem).
Our schools were mainly Catholic, and the State began to fund these to an even greater degree. Secondary education became largely funded by the taxpayer (parents still contributed extra resources) and university education became grant funded. The education provided was genuinely excellent. This was/is for everyone.
Now, this is not a socialist country by any means. It was just about what works - without stupid ideology. The result was: the economy went from strength to strength - and more funds became available as the economic base grew. Foreign direct investment: technology companies, pharmaceutical companies, etc. made this one of their prime destinations in Europe (to a greater extent since Brexit - including Brexiteers’ own companies!). Emigration tapered off, and we imported a skilled workforce to add to the existing population.
We have the highest educated population within the EU (with women having a slightly higher level of educational attainment than men - which is even more beneficial in the raising of children).
This is not an idle boast - we did all of this because we had to. Without which: no economic survival, and no ability to pay our way in the world.
Concentrate on the fundamentals, and plan for the long-term.
