Freedom of choice lies at the heart of American society. Every day, individuals decide what to eat, which doctors to see, who to connect with online, and where to educate their children. Yet, many Americans don’t realize that these choices are illusory at best. The available options in food, healthcare, education, transportation, and even online presence are largely constructed by corporations, whose sweeping influence have made them the public face and executive agents of 21st-century capitalism.
At What Cost confronts how globalization, financial speculation, monopolies, and control of science and technology have enhanced the ability of corporations and their allies to overwhelm influences of government, family, community, and faith. As corporations manipulate demand through skillful marketing and veto the choices that undermine their bottom line, free consumer choice has all but disappeared, and with it, the personal protections guarding our collective health. At What Cost argues that the world created by 21st-century capitalism is simply not fit to solve our most serious public health problems. However, Nicholas Freudenberg also shows that though the road is steep, human and planetary well-being constitute a powerful mobilizing idea for a new social movement, one that will restore the power of individual voice to our democracy.

Thank You .

I don’t wanna be Banquo at the feast, but true, substantive analysis considers both costs and benefits; the ideological mindset looks only at one in isolation. Thx.

This could be excellent. It will be interesting to see how far the book goes in weighing the pros and cons of the profit-at-all-costs philosophy. When the full expense of manufacturing is factored in - and I’m not only thinking of the islands of plastic rubbish in the oceans and the consequent effects on human health from ingesting fish full of the stuff, but also tobacco teflon, fracking et al - it’s hard not to arrive at the conclusion that capitalism has been hiding its true cost for a couple of centuries. And has, in fact, been subsidised by those who ultimately have to pay for cleaning it all up and for their own health treatment.

The summary reads, “Freedom of choice lies at the heart of American society.” But then it goes on to say, “At What Cost argues that the world created by 21st-century capitalism is simply not fit to solve our most serious public health problems…human and planetary well-being constitute a powerful mobilizing idea for a new social movement, one that will restore the power of individual voice to our democracy.”
Socialism is collectivism, which is diametrically opposed to individualism.
America is not a pure democracy, and never has been, but capitalism certainly speaks of democracy. Incidentally, America’s founders did not mention anything about “freedom of choice,” and to suggest socialism does, is disingenuous, as it implies individualism, i.e. individual choice.
Socialism necessarily constitutes the use of force to drive everyone like cattle, into compliance with totalitarian state management, at the risk fines, imprisonment or worse. That doesn’t sound like freedom.
America’s founders gave us a democratic representative constitutional federal republic to help preserve us from such a tyrannical overreaching government.

In short:
Capitalism = individual freedom
Socialism = forced state compliance
(For the sake of the “collective.”)
Of course, depending on who’s in charge, will determine just how much of the “collective” is left to enjoy any social benefits.
