We think we know what an autocratic state looks like: There is an all-powerful leader at the top. He controls the police. The police threaten the people with violence. There are evil collaborators, and maybe some brave dissidents.

The members of Autocracy, Inc, aren’t linked by a unifying ideology, like communism, but rather a common desire for power, wealth, and impunity. Mmmm. Yes. There is a truism which is denied expression: “Corruption is an organizing principle.”
This is true is all structures: E.g.: if there are 10 people is some important committee, then from the outside at least 2 or 3 siginificantly corrupt people are bought in. Then, first, those who oppose corruption most are driven out, and replaced with either more corruptors, or else those who do not resist. Once there are no more resistors, then over some extended period of time the number of corruptors is increased.
Once sufficiently corrupted, this committee can then act to put pressure on other committees to spread the reach of corruption.
A good example of this is the major electical utility in South Africa. So-called “cadres” were injected by Mandela Inc. Over time, the corruptors have become something that looks like a Mafia, with corruption reaching a complete level of penetration.
It is generally understoof that when De Ruiter said that in his estimation around 1 Billion Rand was being stolen per month, that number was conservative.
At the bottom of this pyramid is a generational class of Welfare-Voters. At the top, lies an empowered leadership class of the Absolutely Corrupt. Neither group has any moral limits.

Applebaum is the mouthpiece for this autocratic regime. Is she really going to illustrate and accurately identifying the problem just to turn around and blame it on someone else?
This is amazing that the editor of the Atlantic is going to tell you about the crime her and her cronies are running and then blame on her enemies.
Can someone really be so insane? These are sick and dangerous people.
Applebaum, who hates, and I mean hates the populist right and Trump who’s entire moment is built around fighting this “autocracy”: the globalist, atlanticist elite who sit atop the post-war rules based order and tell us everything they do is in the name of “Democracy”.
Applebaum being a big figure in the democrat party, the party who just ran a bloodless coup on the president of the United States and the nominee for the democratic party, after using a coup to remove the former president and install him in 2020. Her party who has been raving about how great biden is and calling anyone who questioned his cognitive state, a conspiracy theorist. Applebaum has gaslit you on everything from covid, to President Trump being Hitler and the biggest threat to democracy, and every other major objective of the real corrupt elites running this country into the ground, is now going to tell you about “autocrats”?
Applebaum is the editor of none other than Atlantic magazine. The Atlantic is the biggest mouthpiece for exactly that “autocracy” the book claims to be in criticism of. People have to wake up. It is people like Applebaum who are misleading the people in this country, while their cronies steel the wealth of the American people and the world.
Applebaum, is the enemy of the people, and here she is with what appears to be a masterclass in manipulation and gaslighting. What strange times we are living in. BEWARE

Additional Note: While some amount of money is wasted via corruption, e.g. the mentioned 1 Billion per month, a far greater amount of money is spent in a pseudo-ligit way. E.g. external Cadre-operated feeder companies provide inferior products and-or inferior service, and then vanish when their public reputation can no longer be ignored.
Beyond the above, non-Cadre suppliers are excluded (to the point of financial ruin), and even destroyed: an example of this last was Cadres ruining a supplier by means of corrupt project engineers (an imporant part of the Cadre networks) refusing to accept delivered devices. The result was a so-called Sole Supplier.
Even more blatantly, the utility simply does not pay suppliers which have the utility as their majority buyer: at this time, for example, the major manufacturers of a common large electrical device no longer sell to the utility, directly. Rather, external companies, often also Cadre-operated, are used to purchase these large devices, which then become the property of the utility after some period of time.
What is interesting, is that this state of affairs continues due to, apparently, EU mother-companies absorbing huge losses.
What a strange world this has become.

The author is a well known, oft quoted, historian Pulitzer Prize winner who has written much on The USSR and Russia. This short book looks reads like an audition for a job with the CIA, although I suspect she has been a long time associate. It reports on all the usual suspects that are deemed a threat to USA hegemony, China, Russia, Iran, a few of the Stans, Syria, Venezuela, Belarus, Zimbabwe.
The book does indeed ,quite rightly, highlight the suffering of the people of many dictatorships around the world. But what it fails to do is inform us of the brutality inflicted on democratically elected governments directly by the USA and / or its proxies. Think of Albania, 1991, Angola 1975 to 1980s, Bolivia 1964-1975, Chile 1964-1973, Congo 1960-1964, Cuba 1959 to present, El Salvador 1980-1994, Grenada 1979-1984, Indonesia 1957-1958: 1975, Iran 1953: 1979-, Laos 1957-1973, Libya 1981-1989 and still meddling, Nicaragua 1978-1990, Panama 1969-1991, Venezuela - ongoing and Vietnam 1950-1975, plus all the former USSR countries.
Over one million were killed in Indonesia, Millions in Vietnam, hundreds of 1000s in Laos, where they are still suffering from American ordnance dumped in the jungles 50 years ago.
Instead of sending in the troops, soft power such as the Chicago boys went into Russia and other USSR countries at the fall of the Berlin Wall to spread their gospel of neoliberalism, resulting in massive wealth transfers to the oligarchs which led to impoverished citizens, from which base Putin came to power.
American tanks did not roll into Ukraine, but both they and the EU spent $5 billion dollars each spreading anti Russian propaganda and the joys of Western Consumerism and Neo Liberalism in the 10 years before the Russian invasion, ignoring totally the agreements that had been made with Russia in 1990 that no neighboring country join NATO.
America has approximately 700 military bases throughout the world, to ensure that any threats to their hegemony can be immediately challenged. As for their own democracy, that day is long gone: these days it is a plutocracy run by and on behalf of the rich and its corporations. At a recent New York Democratic Party primary, $16 million was spent by a Superpac to ensure the incumbent member of The House of Representatives was removed because he had tendencies to support the Palestinians. The campaign was successful. Superpacs don’t’ have any legal requirement to say where there money comes from, and their spendings are not constrained by election budgets.
A book that purports to be concerned domestic institutional tyranny against its own people has nothing to say about the genocide that has been ongoing in Gaza for the past 9 months – brief mention of the 7th October attack on Israel – nor of the ongoing Nakba which started in 1948 and continues to this day. Nor of course is there any reference that this apartheid state is bankrolled and armed by the USA. Nor of course do the multitude of American NGOs , who fund terrorism by the billions of $s get a mention.

Once everybody realizes Putin and Trump are everything they accuse george soros of being, I hope it becomes a point of humility instead of more blaming the media.

Soros is one of the closest advisers and financiers of Hillary Clinton. The leaked Soros documents describe how the Clinton Global Initiative and Soros Foundation cooperates on undermining the sovereignty of nations around the world, including those in Europe.
A tranche of some 2500 Internal documents, mostly Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point files, as well as pdf files, from George Soros’s Open Society Foundation (OSF) network of non-governmental organizations, which were obtained from the group «DC Leaks», shows that Soros and his advisers lorded over US policy toward Ukraine after the 2014 coup supported by Soros and the Obama administration ousted the democratically-elected Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych and his government. The leaked Soros documents describe how the OSF and Soros’s International Renaissance Foundation (IRF), based at 46 Artema Street in Kiev, worked with the US State Department after the 2014 so-called «Euromaidan» themed revolution to ensure that a federalized Ukraine was not in the picture.

Oh, audiobook quality is 5*. People rating it like we give a shit what their opinions are of its political contents are fucking stupid, as usual.
But then, spending 5000 words yapping and complaining about ‘mods banning your freeze peach’ on a never-US site that by requirement changes backends and involves service interruptions is also so fucking stupid I honestly don’t know if it’s satire or genuine failure of basic comprehension levels a 10-year-old exceeds.
