In Assad: The Triumph of Tyranny, Con Coughlin, veteran commentator on war in the Middle East and author of Saddam: The Secret Life, examines how a mild-mannered ophthalmic surgeon has transformed himself into the tyrannical ruler of a once flourishing country.
Until the Arab Spring of 2011, the world’s view of Bashar al-Assad was largely benign. He and his wife, a former British banker, were viewed as philanthropic individuals doing their best to keep their country at peace. So much so that a profile of Mrs Assad in American Vogue was headlined ‘The Rose in the Desert’. Shortly after it appeared, Syria descended into the horrific civil war that has seen its cities reduced to rubble and thousands murdered and displaced, a civil war that is still raging over a decade later.
In this vivid and authoritative account Con Coughlin draws together all the strands of Assad’s remarkable story, revealing precisely how a young doctor ensured not only that he inherited the presidency from his father, but has held on to power by whatever means necessary, continuing to preside over one of the most brutal regimes of modern times.

There is nothing wrong with Assad. What is terribly wrong is the country that bombed Syria, stole their oil, and killed innocent civilians. Syria was peaceful until you-know-who unleashed its wrath.

abb9632 There’s nothing wrong with someone who’s killed nearly a million Syrians and displaced more than 13 million? Assad is the Hitler of our time. I lost my parents, 3 of my cousins and 6 friends in the Syrian war. All died because of Assad. So, please spare me the “you-know-who” speech.

Those people are dead because of the colour revolution started in 2011 by you-know-who.

And don’t forget what happened in Libya. Pretty much the same thing. Started by you-know-who.

Yeah we know who. Iran and Russia propping up a totalitarian regime.

@toadmanga: Maram Susli (Syrian Girl) who is unquestionably from Syria, disagrees with you.

@abb9632 The Assad family has been butchering people long before the son took office and long before those “colour revolutions”, if that’s what you call people who want to have a decent live (regardless of the ISIS hell that prevailed). See “Hama Massacre”.

Just because international forces have played a part in the Syrian conflict, does not make Assad the “good guy”. This is all part of stoking the divide by justifying one extreme of thinking against another, and part of the greater psy-op, instead of seeing the truth lying somewhere in the grey area in-between.

@privateero: When the USA has domestic strife, do other countries invade with their militaries and drop bombs to “help out?”

“once flourishing country”
Gee, I wonder why Syria isn’t flourishing today, I’m sure it must be Assad’s fault.
Con Coughlin’s career “highlights” and books are all ways to justify the American-Israeli war machine. He’s even the source on the absolutely absurd claim that Iraq was involved in 9/11.

I find it amazing Syrian propping on every forum with dead relatives but no one ever hears from relatives of Afghanis, Iraqis, Libyans and countless millions who died from West senseless wars on Muslims countries.
It is almost like Jews in second world war even though more Russians, Romani’s, Gypsies and people from other nationalities died but in west you have to only think of sufferings of Jews. Oh well…..

Western imperialist propaganda.

Great to know there are so many well-informed people on here.
Hitler’s the go-to comparison for every ruler the US wants toppled. And people still fall for it.
Anybody wishing to learn more without the imperialist propaganda constantly flowing through the US and NATO should read ‘Washington’s Long War on Syria’ by Stephen Gowans.

@latt9292, it is a good point, and while other countries do not drop those “bombs for democracy”, in the USA, there is plenty of evidence of foreign involvement in American politics
Take just one angle, of Yuri Bezemnov’s “Love letter to America”, discussing how the KGB spent 80-90% of their time on political subversion, which appears you are seeing ample evidence of its fruition today
And then you have the Chinese and their aims and agendas. I think just like in the case with Gaddafi, the knee-jerk reaction is to paint the ruler that was toppled as a ‘good guy’, where the truth is often more complex, and unfortunately reflects the low evolution of politics in general. At the least these rulers could have done a better job at defending their countries, which would have happened if they embraced free market capitalism and the inalienable rights of the 2nd amendment. Just as we have seen China’s dramatic rise by embracing Free market capitalism, to a point.

Political History, sounds more like Political Fiction.
Funny how he can walk around the streets of Damascus without bodyguards or a security detail, something that western political leaders would not dream of doing, if he is such a hated tyrant.
