With her characteristic brilliance, grace, and radical audacity, Angela Y. Davis has put the case for the latest abolition movement in American life: the abolition of the prison. As she quite correctly notes, American life is replete with abolition movements, and when they were engaged in these struggles, their chances of success seemed almost unthinkable.
For generations of Americans, the abolition of slavery was the sheerest illusion. Similarly, the entrenched system of racial segregation seemed to last forever, and generations lived in the midst of the practice, with few predicting its passage from custom.
The brutal, exploitative (dare one say, lucrative?) convict-lease system that succeeded formal slavery reaped millions to Southern jurisdictions (and untold miseries for tens of thousands of men and women). Few predicted its passing from the American penal landscape. Davis expertly argues how social movements transformed these social, political, and cultural institutions and made such practices untenable.
In Are Prisons Obsolete?, Professor Davis seeks to illustrate that the time for the prison is approaching an end. She argues forthrightly for “decarceration” and for the transformation of the society as a whole.

The abolition of crime would be cool. However, until such a time…
The death penalty should certainly be killed off, but there is still the issue of containment for the very worst offenders, and the potential of revictimisation under alternative regimes.
What about abolishing furniture? I mean, it’s just sitting around the house…?

Yes. We need to build fewer prisons and more cemeteries.

Read this when I first saw it in the 90’s. Exceptional. The question of prisons is legitimate. Our response to brutality as social control does not become less urgent simply because we are quantified, categorized, and profiled to increasing levels of accuracy. Of course, crime is in itself a means of social control, so I expect it’ll be a few generations before we arrive at a world in which the issue is given serious, broad consideration.

Not sure we will be ready to abolish prisons in the US anytime soon. But we needs to figure out how to reduce the incarceration rate dramatically. Can’t call yourself a free country when you lock up more people, both per capita and total than any other nation in world.
My take is we aren’t tough enough on violent crimes and way too tough on some non violent crimes like drug crimes. However with white collar crime it’s typical just a slap on the wrest.
Rip off the American tax payers for over $600M in fraud and you get to walk and become governor of Florida and now Senator of Florida.
Something is not right that is for sure.

Well…, ask a murderer and terrorist like Angela and I’d guess the answer would be… no. lol
Never forget, less than 7% of the population commits over 51% of the rapes and murders…

lol! I will agree but when they release them, they should live near the people who approve this BS. I’m pretty sure they would be less compassionate when these thugs are living near them.
