Whenever we envision a world without war, without prisons, without capitalism, we are producing speculative fiction. Organizers and activists envision, and try to create, such worlds all the time. Walidah Imarisha and adrienne maree brown have brought twenty of them together in the first anthology of short stories to explore the connections between radical speculative fiction and movements for social change. The visionary tales of Octavia’s Brood span genres—sci-fi, fantasy, horror, magical realism—but all are united by an attempt to inject a healthy dose of imagination and innovation into our political practice and to try on new ways of understanding ourselves, the world around us, and all the selves and worlds that could be. The collection is rounded off with essays by Tananarive Due and Mumia Abu-Jamal, and a preface by Sheree Renée Thomas.

I love Scifi, but social justice scifi? No thanks.

I really tried. I did. But between mary sues, idealolgical overload, and overall poor writing in general, i found this to be far more humoreous then was intended. Just like Lady Thor, the SJWs managed to ruin something else I love.

Why do the SJWs stand with communism, refusing capitalism? I’ll ask one with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts. The next time one asks me if i ” want fries with that”

If SJWs ruined SciFi they ruined it since at least the 70s. Not sure if you know Ursula K Le Guin, Samuel R Delany, Octavia Butler, Joanna Russ, Michael Moorcock, Lewis Shiner, Joan Slonczewski, Elisabeth Vonarberg, John Brunner, Vonda McIntyre, Jessica Amanda Salmonson, Kim Stanley Robinson, China Mieville, etc. Octavia’s Brood is on an anarchist publisher. Anarchist, feminist, queer, and otherwise radical publishers have been publishing SciFi since the 70s. Lots of good stuff on the Feminist Press for instance. Semiotext(e) SciFi (1989) is a classic anthology co-published by AK Press, the publisher of Octavia’s Brood.
You don’t have to like it, but social consiousness has been in scifi for a long time, and isn’t going anywhere.

@boneswithfiddle - I love the work of the writers you mention (at least the ones I’ve read), but overt political messages can mar a good story and take you out of the fiction. If their object is to hit you about the head with a politicised lesson, it subverts the suspension of disbelief. More like reading a tract, perhaps.

@caesar963 - I agree with you. There is plenty of bad scifi in the world and some of it is ruined by political preaching. My only point is that contrary to above commenters, this sort of scifi is nothing new, not to mention in the extreme minority. SJWs are not taking over scifi, contrary to paranoid fantasies of Angry Puppies or anyone else. Nor are they going anywhere. There are going to be more anthologies like this one for me to read and them to gnash their teeth over.

This is excellent! I’ve been looking for this and it’s a great listen! There’s nothing wrong with a good space opera, but the best sci-fi really digs in and tries to say something. I love it!
