…And What Do You Do? is a hard-hitting analysis of the royal family, exposing its extravagant use of public money and the dubious behaviour of some among its ranks.
In this audiobook, former government minister Norman Baker argues that the British public deserves better than this puerile diet.
…And What Do You Do? is a hard-hitting analysis of the royal family, exposing its extravagant use of public money and the highly dubious behaviour of some among its ranks, whilst being critical of the knee-jerk sycophancy shown by the press and politicians. Baker also considers the wider role the royals play in society, including the link with House of Lords reform, and the constitutional position of the monarch, which is important given Prince Charles’ present and intended approach.
…And What Do You Do? asks important questions about the future of the world’s most famous royal family.

Really, what good is a royal family without elves, dragons, and ents? One is being short-changed, isn’t one?

@caesar963
They seem useless to us because we’re American. I imagine they’re the equivalent of a historic building we want to protect? At some point the people will turn on them like we’re turning on statues of racist af historical figures in public places. People don’t like change, sometimes even when they’re being harmed by the status quo.

I’m even closer than that, james! There’s just a narrow strip of Irish Sea twixt them ‘n me. Apparently, they do generate revenue through tourism, and the institution is fairly consistently popular. However, having an hereditary monarch as head of state does seem infantilising - it also perpetuates a foolish class system, with people bowing & scraping to their betters. Anachronism & nostalgia all bound up, I suppose. And some of ‘em can even get away with paedophilia! (Allegedly.)

Oh damn there I go making an ass out of myself with assumptions lol. I’m pretty sure that allegedly is more of a likely probably definitely… unfortunately. Same goes for the monsters over here.

Speaking of monsters…
Their honours systems - awards & titles from the monarch - creates a regime whereby people like Sir Jimmy Savile OBE KCSG (?!) received more power & access to carry on an enormous campaign of sexual, physical & emotional abuse of people, because he was weighed down with weird, meaningless, empty honorifics. Sir Jimmy was also given his own gold-plated set of keys to high-security Broadmoor mental hospital. He was free to abuse mentally ill patients because of his official recognition. He was, in addition, a great friend of the next “king” Prince Charles.
I think the Brits might have ya beat in this category, james.

That’s a disturbing history lesson. The Brits very well may have us beat, but it’s hard to know. The older I get the more I begin thinking people in general are just terrible. Everywhere. And we only know about what we know about because of where we are, our experiences, who we know and what we educate ourselves about. Uh oh my sadness is leaking onto the internet.

There’s still goodness! Power over people is deeply corrupting though.

Got to be honest. I’m not really bothered about the monarchy after the queen passes.

Germans only put in place because James II and his descendants were catholic.
June 6th, 2020
…the last Germans in the shop, apparently. In terms of succession, the first Hanoverian King of England was 52nd in line to the throne. All the other 51 were Catholics.

No Kings, No Gids, No Masters = Peace On Earth

No Kings, No Gods, No Masters = Peace On Earth.
Or at least a very good start.

An upper-class English friend of mine explained to me that a country needs something higher to look to - other than just it’s government. The government and the army need a symbol to serve; or else, they’re self-serving. The equivalent in America might be the flag. To be honest, I’m not sure I buy it, but it was an interesting idea.

@royalq - That is the traditional idea. The State being personified & embodied in a figurehead. Honouring a Constitution would be too abstract for a population. In America, the President fulfills the role of being head of State & head of government. In my country, we split the roles into prime minister & president. I remember from constitutional law lectures, these two duties are referred to as: the efficient function, and the dignified function. So, over there, Donald incarnates both the dignified & the efficient within his person (no laughing at the back!).
That’s why we have all this hoop-la, and pomp & circumstance around the office of president or monarch. Hail to the Chief, and all that. Walter Bagehot thought this was necessary in order ‘to excite and preserve the reverence of the population.’ There is something in it; you will routinely see Brits on tv weeping & crying when they see the Queen at some ceremonial bunfight, or other. It might work for the majority, which is what counts.

…people are regularly reduced to tears at DT’s appearance/approach as well, of course.

Thank you for this.

Starting a filename off with a “.” makes that file hidden on Linux, took me a bit figure out where the download went lol.
