A timely, provocative expose of American political and business leadership’s deep ties to China: a network of people who believe they are doing the right thing–at a profound and often hidden cost to U.S. interests.
The past few years have seen relations between China and the United States shift, from enthusiastic economic partners, to wary frenemies, to open rivals. Americans have been slow to wake up to the challenges posed by the Chinese Communist Party. Why did this happen? And what can we do about it?
In America Second, Isaac Stone Fish traces the evolution of the Party’s influence in America. He shows how America’s leaders initially welcomed China’s entry into the U.S. economy, believing that trade and engagement would lead to a more democratic China. And he explains how–although this belief has proved misguided–many of our businesspeople and politicians have become too dependent on China to challenge it.
America Second exposes a deep network of Beijing’s influence in America, built quietly over the years through prominent figures like former secretaries of state Henry Kissinger and Madeleine Albright, Disney chairman Bob Iger, and members of the Bush family. And it shows how to fight that influence-without being paranoid, xenophobic, or racist. This is an authoritative and important story of corruption and good intentions gone wrong, with serious implications not only for the future of the United States, but for the world at large.

It seems to me to have been a major blunder in long term stragegic thinking by America to have transferred so much manufacturing technology to China. This has allowed China to lift itself from a mainly agrarian society in the ’70’s to the modern and wealthy country it is today.
Basically, it was giving a backward communist country the means to become a superpower.
Did anyone predict this outcome. It does seem quite obvious in hindsight.
Perhaps Nixon and others believed that the modernization of China would result in a political change towards democracy in China. The Tiananmen Square Massacre ended any chance of that happening any time soon.

“Perhaps Nixon and others believed that the modernization of China would result in a political change towards democracy in China.”
Indeed, Acanthrohu. It was less about offshoring and profits and more about the hope that as China got richer it would develop a class of people who would want to defend that.
Yes, in hindsight, the Party assured that its own survival was the only thing that mattered.

Before pooloo60 (aka I’m an anus I am) starts, it wasn’t the left who transferred manufacturing to China because they hate Murica. It was the 1%ers because they wanted even higher profits.

@Bytbiter… Correct.
America’s Great Generation then the Baby Boomer generation, in particular, helped transfer the manufacturing overseas, mostly to China, which began in the 1980s.
Don’t forget WHY many American businesses did so… Americans can look in the mirror. They wanted good items at Low prices! They got it as American businesses did what the American consumers Wanted!
Boomers were and still are in charge of the current U.S. and literally had 4 Decades to change that but did Not!
Why?
Who benefitted the most during that time? Who had the necessities and luxuries for themselves and families? How benefitted from their business investments esp. in their retirement accounts right now as many Boomers have already begun to retire?
Who is still in charge of the U.S. Congress?
Lots of hatred and racism from White America esp. the Boomers who benefitted from decades past to the present towards the Chinese.
Blame the Chinese govt not the people but that’s not what it appears in the media or when you talk to Americans!
Now the Americans complain instead of then when they could’ve stopped the increased business transfers overseas decades ago?
American businesses are STILL transferring businesses and units overseas!
Talk about hypocrisy, ignorant, arrogant and greedy, traits that generally describe Americans to others around the world, literally!
