Tremendous book, but Caldwell’s “history” is only fantasy. Cicero had no Jewish friends and no knowledge of Jewish ritual. He is considered a proto Anti-Semite, and characterized the practices of Hebrews as a “barbara superstitio.” The closest philo-Hebraist in Cicero’s orbit was Asinius Pollio, and when Seneca’s proposed immortalizing Cicero posthumously Pollio ostentatiously abstained.
The book is well written, and audio adaptation outstanding, but don’t conflate its story with history.
