The dark side of the gig economy (Uber, Airbnb, etc.) and how to make it equitable for the users and workers most exploited.
When the “sharing economy” launched a decade ago, proponents claimed that it would transform the experience of work - giving earners flexibility, autonomy, and a decent income. It was touted as a cure for social isolation and rampant ecological degradation. But this novel form of work soon sprouted a dark side: exploited Uber drivers, neighborhoods ruined by Airbnb, racial discrimination, and rising carbon emissions. Several of the most prominent platforms are now faced with existential crises as they prioritize growth over fairness and long-term viability.
Nevertheless, the basic model - a peer-to-peer structure augmented by digital tech - holds the potential to meet its original promises. Based on nearly a decade of pioneering research, After the Gig dives into what went wrong with this contemporary reimagining of labor. The book examines multiple types of data from 13 cases to identify the unique features and potential of sharing platforms that prior research has failed to pinpoint. Juliet B. Schor presents a compelling argument that we can engineer a reboot: through regulatory reforms and cooperative platforms owned and controlled by users, an equitable and truly shared economy is still possible.

Total nonsense. Never happened, never will.

Limits to Growth was right. New research shows we’re nearing collapse
This article is more than 6 years old
Four decades after the book was published, Limit to Growth’s forecasts have been vindicated by new Australian research. Expect the early stages of global collapse to start appearing soon”

Consequences time is here. Unprecedented global Overshoot. Made possible by a one time allotment of millions of years of stored sunlight in the form of coal, Natgas & oil. It’s never coming back, nor is economic growth. We’re at the point where we can no longer paper our net energy decline over with absurd & obscene levels of debt (most will never be paid back)
The ‘Sharing Economy’ along with MAGA & AntiFa are just a few of the recent crisis cults to pop up & help keep the denial & blame going. There will be more to come & all will fail since none of them can put the cheap abundant energy back in the ground. We spent our treasure & now only the dregs remain. There’s no getting around the laws of physics. I’ll wager most will cling to the grand promises of the crisis cults. Doubly so if they have Savior/Daddy leaders.
