In A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, Mary Wollstonecraft tackles the wasted potential she sees in women, refusing to see them as inferior to men; she decries their limitations and suggests that they are worthy of an equal standard of education and that they should be taught to develop their own reason, not simply how to gain a man. Written in 1792, at the height of the French Revolution, A Vindication is an eloquent and persuasive response to the prevailing attitudes of the time. It is the original feminist manifesto.

This’ll bring back memories.
At the time of publication, it provided a much-needed corrective to the marriage madness of Jane Austen et al.

“This’ll bring back memories.”
Wow! Just how old are you? ;-D

I only realised that after I posted it - I was hoping it’d go under the radar.

…if it hadn’t been for you pesky kids.

That’s just how we are, but now I want a Scooby snack.

I hope you know that the writers were just trying to smuggle in references to having the munchies? That’s the reason Scooby-Doo was one of the most subversive, countercultural and dangerous shows ever to air.
Also, when they cry out in terror - “Scooby-Doo, where are you?!” - that’s a cryptic allusion to cannabis dissociation and depersonalisation.
Never let your kids watch that seditious agitator!

I don’t have any kids. I was too busy being a seditious agitator.

That’s what I feared.

A “much-needed corrective” to Jane Austen, 20 years before Austen’s first novel was published? Wollstonecraft really was ahead of her time.

I anticipated this question, timoleon! I did say “and others”, meaning those who could only envisage marriage as a means of advancement for women. Austen was, of course, writing at this time, but was published later (demonstrably afflicted by “marriage madness”). You have to look at the period as one of low expectations. One which required a “much-needed corrective”.

@caesar963
Learn how to take a correction, dude.

I should take a lesson from you, how many times have you been comprehensively and devastatingly refuted now? As Monty Python said - that is where your argument falls to the ground, compadre.
