For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace.
Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People’s History of the United States is the only volume to tell America’s story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America’s women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers. As Zinn shows, many of our country’s greatest battles - the fights for a fair wage, an eight-hour workday, child-labor laws, health and safety standards, universal suffrage, women’s rights, racial equality - were carried out at the grassroots level, against bloody resistance.

Howard Zinn is a Communist. Zinn described himself as “something of an anarchist, something of a socialist.
This diatribe is more about preaching the negatives of Capitalism vs the ideal of Socialism/Communism. Especially disturbing, and frightening is his thoughts on what the “perfect society” needs to be in order to be “Utopian”. See page 639.
This book is hatred, dishonesty, control and a future like George Orwell’s 1984! Garbage being sold as glitter.

I think it’s not a stretch to say we have a new generation young people/activists is the results of learning from truth-telling content instead of textbooks preaching American exceptionalism.
If possible, would love to access “How the South Won the Civil War: Oligarchy, Democracy, and the Continuing Fight for the Soul of America” by Heather Cox Richardson.

Why do Americans feel the need to demonise those with differing political or philosophical beliefs? Be thankful you have access to multiple opinions from all sides. Okay, you disagree, but it doesn’t mean the author is the devil incarnate bent on destroying America from within. You never know, perhaps something Zinn suggests may be the answer to one of America’s many problems. Even Limbaugh gets something right every now and again.
Zinn is good value.

Jiminy Cricket… it is not strongly in evidence that Americans learn proper history at school. “The natives just disappeared” is still a strong idea in the minds of many. The mentally strong can look clearly at their own history and the destruction it contains

When the evidence is such - even to meet the civil standard - that British people learn anything but a silly, innocuous caricature of their own history, during what is lightly referred to as “education” - then p’haps they’ll be in a slightly better position to preach to other peoples. Not remotely likely, however.
“We civilised the world” is still a strong idea there, in the minds of the “mentally strong” (WTF? I mean, WT actual F?).
“Civilised the world” via mass slaughter, managed famines, concentration camps, destruction of cultures, economic exploitation, and, oddly enough, “the natives just disappearing” - allied with your chief exports: terror & wholesale human abuses/atrocities.
But quick, everyone, just look at America!

All of the people who call this a communist whatever…. they haven’t read this book. I estimate that approximately ALL conservatives would actually enjoy this book if they read it. It’s not a partisan book. It’s true stories.
Does it paint an ugly picture of some parts of American history? Yes. Is all history fulll of awfulness? Yes. I would bet money that history is full of awfulness on every inhabited planet that does history. Good stuff too, like in this book.
Zinn only wrote this book because he loved America. Read it you conservitard. You might really really enjoy it. My wife thought she would hate all marvel movies. Turns out she loves Iron Man. Take a chance. Don’t be a sissy. If I can get through books by Ann Coulter, Milo unpronounceable and Benny Shapirro, you can get through this.

No matter what your political views are, this book is quite interesting. It won’t make you a communist , but will perhaps widen your views as to a different historical perspective.
