In her graceful, compelling style, Dava Sobel chronicles the history of the Copernican Revolution, relating the story of astronomy from Aristotle to the Middle Ages. In its midst will be her play, And the Sun Stood Still, imagining the dialogue that would have transpired between Rheticus and Copernicus in their months together. As she achieved with her best sellers Longitude and Galileo’s Daughter, Sobel expands the bounds of science writing, giving us an unforgettable portrait of scientific achievement.

Thank you so much

It took the Church over seventy years to ban Copernicus’ book.
Just think of how much trouble could have been avoided if only they’d destroyed it before it got into Galileo’s hands.

Oy, don’t let facts get in the way, dear old boy. As to the controversy, the priest-astronomer, Nicholas Copernicus (he built his own observatory), did formulate the heliocentric model. And the originator of Atomic theory, Jesuit Fr. Roger Boscovich, used the same theories - entirely uncontroversially - published subsequently, in his great work.
The point at issue was that Galileo could not account for stellar parallax shift, which was of principal concern in terms of presenting definitive proofs.
A major aspect of the controversy was, of course, the background noise of the Reformation. It was comparable to the Cold War, with significant tensions forming the climate of the time. Protestants launched broadsides against Catholicism for being more committed to reason, in the Church-created university system & elsewhere, than literalist interpretation.
However, the factual historical record is never as emotionally comforting & sexxy as the contrived stuff.
But Sobel’s works are good, for those actually interested in history & science.
