Lol. Real socialism doesn’t interest most of the people who would comment. They’re only interested in politically motivated fake accusations of socialism.

Genocidal recipe books, as history tragically demonstrated.

@caesar963 - hadn’t seen your comments in a while, maybe just wasn’t looking at the right books. Was getting a bit worried. Glad you’re okay.

@desspec While there are certainly people who are critical of socialism without any understanding of it, the problem, beyond the community or tribal level, is that amoral power hungry monsters represent about 6% of the population, insert themselves into the workings of government and ruin everything for everyone else. So there needs to be some means of policing this. Forms of government seem to work more or less well for those governed depending on both their failsafes and how engaged the population is in preventing the subversion of governmental organs for selfish ends. With a disengaged population I think subversion is inevitable regardless of governmental structure.
The violence associated with the rise of both China’s and Russia’s communist governments ensured that they were corrupt from the get go, but I also think that the idea of class warfare, accurate as it often seems from my perspective in the US, may make a poor basis for government, even under the best circumstances, since it inevitably means that the government has a built in scapegoat to blame for every problem it encounters. Even where problems arise due to governmental incompetence the bourgeoisie can be blamed, thus allowing the government to avoid actually correcting systemic issues.
Certainly this is a problem across political systems, but the divisiveness comes baked into communism, and opponents can more easily be labeled as enemies of the state. I think that’s a problem, not an insurmountable one perhaps, but something that we might need a true AI system in place as a fail safe to avoid. The temptation for government officials, no matter the governmental system they belong to, to avoid responsibility is just too great, I think. And in that environment the same nationalistic sentiment that allowed a drunkard like McCarthy to assume power in the US can be much more easily abused by the amoral 6% of the population to assume power.
Doesn’t mean there’s no answer of course. Regulated capitalism with heavy tax based reinvestment in the citizens seems to be working fairly well for some countries. Certainly better than the US’s model is working for the bottom half of the US population.

Quick summary of the books and ideals:
Fallible humans control the means of “socializing” all commerce and stifle the want for independent thought.
Mass slaughter ensues…for “the good” of all.
The end.

Bless yer heart, you ol’ scoundrel.

“works” from a man who lived off his rich capitalist father and also from the capitalist investments Marx made……
…. like any typical “progressive” he did not live by way of his “intellectual” writings….

As usual, Groucho’s writings are not acknowledged.

@nylon: “I think I’ll slip out of these wet clothes and into a nice dry martini” has to be one of the greatest lines ever written.

@erouting: Unfortunately the 6% amoral power hungry monsters seems to be a curse of humanity. Independent of this however, democracy, as it is almost universally practiced, has 2 basic flaws - both to do with qualifications:
1) Candidates do not need any qualification for a cargo, they only need to be elected.
2) Voters do not need any qualification either. Analphabets have the same vote as intellectuals, all they need to be able to do is make a cross.
Add the no-qualification-requirement to your 6%, then it is actually surprising that we do not have more mediocre and corrupt people in leading cargoes on this planet!

The true nature of Socialism is glossed over by its adherents, who ignore both the historical evidence of its failure wherever it has been embraced and the heart of the movement as exposed in books like “The Lost Literature of Socialism” by George Watson. Seems some people want to keep repeating the failures of the past to show how clever they are. Duh.

@AlunS
“Seems some people want to keep repeating the failures of the past to show how clever they are.”
So, very much like unrestricted capitalism and trickle-down economics, then. Massive successes in the UK for those this week.

@AlunS “the true nature of socialism” by which you mean the worst cases, and imply these are the only cases.
Shall we list the failures of unrestrained capitalism? Of monarchy (seems to be what the GOP is moving towards these days), theocracy?
Socialism is what you get with democracy and an informed electorate. But there is little danger of that in the US, so sleep easy.

Watson’s book is instructive (among many others, of course). A thorough knowledge of the factual historical record will inoculate a person against all such extreme, failed ideologies. Consign them to the garbage can of history.

There isn’t much need for books if you’ve lived through the thing. USSR was a huge dumpster fire from day 1, and I’m extremely happy it died, even if right now it’s successors want to bring it back.

@nylon
Jokes about socialism are only funny if everybody gets them equally.
