In The Persian Expedition (also known as The March of the Ten Thousand and Anabasis), Xenophon, a disciple of Socrates, relates his experiences of fighting with the Greek mercenary army “The Ten Thousand” in Persia, and how he led them back to the safety of the Black Sea coast.
Seeking to depose his brother Artaxerxes and take his place upon the Persian throne, Cyrus the Younger leads the 10,000 mercenaries on a dangerous campaign deep into the heart of Persia. There, Cyrus is killed and his generals overthrown, leaving a young Xenophon to lead the army on its treacherous journey home. Snowy mountains, wide rivers, violent blizzards, and hostile tribes obstruct their way, testing Xenophon’s leadership and his soldiers’ perseverance to the extreme.

Possibly the greatest war book ever written (one of the few that captures the tedium and the moral ambiguity alongside the exhilaration and the annealing danger).

A great book by itself but ….if i want to say something about the author of the book(Socrates) i can say he lied about one thing …. Cyrus wasn’t killed by war or accident…. Even Herodotus lied about this too….why? Because the archaeologists found a few ancient inscription in Babylon that that tells us the exact date of Cyrus’s death and in that time that the inscriptions suggest…there wasn’t any war between persia and Greece….the inscriptions has been written by Babylon historians….. I don’t want to disrespect these great philosophers of Greece…but they also were humans too they could’ve lied to us because of the hatred (or many other reasons)…. what i do know certainly is that cyrus wasn’t killed in a war with the Greece….i hope i shared some useful knowledge to you all..thanks for reading and also thanks for your all free audiobooks….

Pemo… It’s not argued that Cyrus was killed in war with Greece, he fought Artaxerxes with some Greek mercenaries… Also this is written by Xenophon not Socrates…
