The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel by the English author and scholar J. R. R. Tolkien. Set in Middle-earth, on Earth at some distant time in the past, the story began as a sequel to Tolkien’s 1937 children’s book The Hobbit, but eventually developed into a much larger work.

For those who do not know how to open chapterized m4b. file to see the chapters, here are some suggestions:
1. On a PC, try downloading VLC player, QuickTime Player, or iTunes. They are all free and easily found on google. If you’re a movie-lover, I recommend VLC Player, and if you’re a music-lover, iTunes is recommended.
- With VLC player, open the m4b. file with the program. Once it starts playing, click the tab ‘Playback’ at the top left, then move the pointer to ‘Chapter’, and you’ll be able to see the chapters.
- With iTunes, first you should drag the m4b. file into the program. Once it’s in the ‘Audiobooks’ menu, double click to play it. You then will see a ‘Chapters’ tab appearing on the menu tab at the top.
- With QuickTime Player, open the m4b. file with the program. You should be able to see the chapters right away on the right.
2. On Apple devices, it should be nearly the same with using iTunes. Once you transfer the m4b. file from your PC to your devices through iTunes, the rest should be simple.
3. On Android devices, try Smart Audiobook Player, Listen Audiobook Player, or Mort Audio Player. I never use these apps, so I’m not certain about this, but I’ve heard highly of them.
*** If all fail and you must convert these m4b. files, the softwares I would recommend are “Free M4a to MP3 Converter” or “freac - free audio converter”. So far those are the softwares I know that can split a chapterized m4b. file back into multiple mp3 files. Converting in other ways or changing the format to m4a. is not recommended because it will likely lose the chapters.
~~~~~~~
Hours had been spent to organize and chapterize these files in m4b format in order for everyone to enjoy the audiobooks in the best way possible. I hope you all enjoy them, and let me know if there’s something wrong with any of the files.
Please Seed and leave some feedback if you like. Thank you!
Thanks, very interesting!
For android I recommend “Simple Audiobook Player” (Simple ABP) is the best I could find until now.
Thanks again!
Thank you for this.
If your audio player can’t play m4b, change m4b to m4a helps
@Dave.Sauvetage: you don’t need to put all this tutorial about M4B in every torrent. Most of our torrents are M4B now.
We have howtos and FAQs about how to play or convert M4B in the forum. Link to those if you like; add or suggest changes there.
@Gweilo: Thanks. I guess it’s an annoying habit of mine since I used to see many comments complaining about not being able to open the m4b files nor see the chapters.
If these are like the MP3 files I have, an issue with the mix may be problematic for some listeners.
Far too often the letter ‘S’ will come through like a terribly shrill high-pitched whistle. It can feel like it’s going right through your brain.
Another mixing issue, which isn’t quite as bad, appears during a number of the combat scenes. The mix can be such that it is difficult to hear the spoken word over the music and sound effects. Not necessarily impossible to hear, particularly if you’re very familiar with the content. But it can be a little frustrating, and even disheartening, given how amazing the rest of it is.
Otherwise, I have found these fan made projects to be absolutely extraordinary. Given their incredible production value I’m hesitant to even call them “fan-made,” as I wouldn’t want anyone to take away any preconceived notions regarding their quality. So, I will try to be very clear: These ARE amazing.
I’ve had the MP3 version on my laptop for quite some time. But after I accidentally deleted them off my phone, I decided to see if they were here, as my laptop was not conveniently at hand. And I’m so very glad I did, given these m4b! Yay!
I do hope these aren’t the same mix. But if that happens to be the case, I hope they don’t cause anyone else as much trouble as they did me.
Mostly satisfied, but a minor point that annoys the crap out of me…there is no opening, introduction, or chapter heading read at the start of book 2 on any of these. It just starts with the text of the first chapter of book 2 (and book 4 and 6 respectively). It does note chapters with headings for all other chapters, but it’s like they were cut from just the start of the second book of each volume.
This is a magnificent triumph that I cannot praise enough. Phil Dragash’ narration is every bit as polished as any professional audiobook actor (MORE than many, actually) and his film-adjacent voices for each of the characters are phenomenal, a bonus I wasn’t expecting. The decision to use Shore’s score adds tremendous power and emotion, and is extremely well executed. It would be so easy to get the mix wrong and have the music overpower the reading or vice versa. But it’s perfectly balanced. I wish I could express my thanks and appreciation directly to Phil Dragash, and anyone else who was involved in the music editing and mixing.
Thanks for this batch! Is there any chance you would do the Andy Serkis version too?
September 19th, 2023
Just found out about this version and glad to see an M4B version was on here. I’m nearly done with Serkis’s Fellowship of the rings but when I do a reread, I’ll use this one.
